Dandelion 04:52
Out on the wind, out on the wind Like a dandelion on a summer spin Out in the wild, whatever which way True as a smile, short as a day Love in your chest, fear in your head Ground in your skin, sky in your bed Back to the wind, back to the wind Sun in your eyes, hold it in Let out a sigh, gonna miss this place Forever on fire, tumblin’ in space Smoke in your lungs, clouds in your eyes You hear mama’s voice when her baby cries Out on the wind, out on the wind Miles an hour, runnin’ Let out a sigh, give it one more look See the mountain high, and the burning book You were oh so soft and forever scarred With your clothes all off running in the yard Back to the wind, back to the wind Back to the wind You were mine to lose, in a fever dream Did it all for who is remembering

Seems like a too big heart won’t get you anything but my love baby Even your too big heart don’t want that now I wasn’t making anything working day in day out I wasn’t owner to anything never did work it out One day I look up, can’t recognize what dreams were my own How can you say that you don’t love me when everyone else is gone How can you say that you don’t love me when everyone else is gone How can you say that you don’t love me when everyone else is gone

Unrelated 03:16
Every word I’ve ever heard is untrue And now I’ve got to find a new perspective on the truth Everything I’ve ever said reminds me of something someone who is dead once said of a totally unrelated world Every word I sing to you is untrue It’s only the illusions that I’ve happened to come to No I don’t know if you’re listening or have A need to hear, it’s I who needs this thing to speak, and echo off the atmosphere Every word Every word Could echo off the walls Of other worlds

about

On his new LP, Slow Fawn, Sam Cohen rarely sings. When he does,
it’s about the limitations of words.

“I don’t have a lot to say verbally about these last couple of years. Everything was chaos. It didn’t need pointing out. Whereas music can transmit joy and healing, those words themselves can sound hokey, or just sort of evaporate.”

Accordingly, on this album, short stanzas of lyrics appear like small islands in a sea of meditative instrumentals. The scarcity of words (which happen to be some of Cohen’s best), inevitably give them a prominent spotlight when they do occur. All of this instrumental space allows the record to expand into a wide range of musical terrain, recalling at times the looped percussion and minimal jazz of Moondog or the bright glow of Terry Riley, while the songs pull from outside experimenters like JJ Cale or Todd Rundgren at their very best. Absent are the fuzz guitar solos of Cohen’s past work, replaced by moody saxophones and flutes played by Cochemea Gastelum and Stuart Bogie. The record features several other collaborators as well. Photay (Evan Shornstein) provides percussive Buchla synthesizer, piano, and some breezy drumming to the mix, while Oliver Hill (aka Dustrider) offers violin and piano, and Saundra Williams lends her voice to the hypnotic refrain of ‘Another World’. Bass and drum grooves are, like the vocals, used sparingly throughout the album, which floats as often as it pounds. Stepping out of his comfort zone was a central theme for Cohen, evidenced in his explanation of the title.

“I got into unfamiliar territory on this record, getting away from the guitar and songs and familiar things. I was approaching everything as more of a noob - kind of clumsy and vulnerable… like a slow fawn.”

The final result is the document of an artist’s emergence from isolation. Joy and warmth drift from the speakers despite the weariness and disillusionment of the era. From the first notes of the album’s opener,‘Morning Resolution’, Slow Fawn feels like a new beginning.
